The story of Lord Hanuman’s marriage is not very well known, and there are different versions of it in various sources.
According to one version, Hanuman married Suvarchala Devi, the daughter of Surya Dev, the Sun God, who was also his teacher.
Hanuman was a devoted student of Surya Dev, and learned the Vedas and the nine grammars from him. However, he was also an Ajanma Brahmachari, a lifelong celibate, and did not wish to marry. Surya Dev, as his guru, asked him to marry Suvarchala as his guru dakshina, or offering of gratitude.
He also assured him that he would remain a Brahmachari even after marriage, as Suvarchala was a divine maiden who was born from his rays.
Hanuman obeyed his guru’s command and married Suvarchala, but he spent his whole life serving Lord Rama, and did not have any attachment to his wife.
According to another version, Hanuman married Anjana Sundari, the daughter of Kushadhvaja, the brother of King Janaka of Mithila. This version is found in the Jain Ramayana written by Vimalasuri.
Hanuman met Anjana Sundari when he accompanied Rama and Lakshmana to Mithila for the swayamvara of Sita. He was impressed by her beauty and intelligence, and she was also attracted to him.
They got married with the consent of their parents and elders, and had a son named Suvarnasena. However, Hanuman did not stay with his wife for long, as he had to follow Rama to the forest. He also vowed to remain celibate for the rest of his life after seeing the devotion of Rama and Sita.
There is also a temple dedicated to Hanuman and his wife in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. The temple is called Chaturbhuj Temple, and it has an idol of Hanuman with four arms, holding a mace, a lotus, a conch and a discus. The idol also has a female figure sitting on his lap, who is identified as his wife. The temple is believed to be built in the 9th or 10th century CE by the Chandela dynasty.
So, Hanuman had a wife? I bet she made him wear a tiny little crown and a matching tiny little loincloth! Heehee, that’s funny to imagine.
According to ancient texts, there are differing accounts. Some say he was married to Suvarchala, others say he remained celibate. Further research is needed to clarify this aspect of his life.
The question of Lord Hanuman’s marital status is complex and depends greatly on the specific scriptures and interpretations being used. Many different schools of thought exists. Its a fascinating subject!
